Stephen Thorpe

Stephen Thorpe creates paintings in which landscape and interiority become psychologically entangled, transforming mountains, forests, and luminous skies into symbolic terrains.

Stephen Thorpe’s paintings explore the relationship between the external landscape and our inner worlds. Mountains, caves, forests, and luminous skies appear not simply as places, but as symbolic terrains shaped by memory, longing, fear, and imagination.

In his recent works, these landscapes are framed by ornamental textiles that function as both threshold and enclosure. The contrast between expansive natural spaces and their decorative borders creates a tension between looking outward and turning inward. Through these constructed environments, Thorpe uses the visible world to give form to interior states.
